How to add an AI chatbot with Google Tag Manager

If your site already runs Google Tag Manager, you can add an AI chatbot without touching your site's code. Create a Custom HTML tag, paste your CAAC Go snippet, set the trigger to All Pages, then Submit and Publish the container. The chat button then loads on every page that has your GTM container.

Your snippet from CAAC Go — Step 1 shows where to copy it.

Google Tag Manager already installed on every page of your site, and Publish permission on its container.

Step 1 · Copy your snippet in CAAC Go

Channels → 💬 Website widget → 🌐 Add to my website → Copy snippet

  1. In CAAC Go, click Channels in the sidebar, then 💬 Website widget.
  2. On the install card, choose 🌐 Add to my website.
  3. Click Copy snippet.

Your snippet looks like this:

<script src="https://caacgo.cresclab.com/widget.js" data-key="YOUR_WIDGET_KEY" data-color="#5090FF" async></script>

Copy your own snippet from the dashboard. It already has your widget key in place of YOUR_WIDGET_KEY, so never type the key by hand — one wrong character and the chat won't find your agent. The widget key is public (anyone can see it in your site's HTML), so it's fine to paste it into your site settings.

Step 2 · Create a Custom HTML tag

Tags → New → Tag Configuration → Custom HTML

  1. In Google Tag Manager, open the container for your website.
  2. Go to Tags and click New.
  3. Click Tag Configuration and choose Custom HTML.
  4. Paste your snippet into the HTML box.
  5. Leave Support document.write unticked. The snippet doesn't need it.

Step 3 · Fire the tag on all pages

Triggering → All Pages → Save

  1. Click Triggering and choose All Pages. (Initialization - All Pages also works.)
  2. Give the tag a name you'll recognise, such as "CAAC Go chat".
  3. Click Save.

Step 4 · Preview, then publish

Preview → Submit → Publish

  1. Click Preview to open Tag Assistant with your site, and check that your CAAC Go tag fires and the chat button appears.
  2. When it looks right, click Submit, then Publish. You can name the version, for example "Add CAAC Go chat", so it's easy to find later.

Preview doesn't change your live site. Nothing is live until you publish, even if CAAC Go already shows the widget as live. The chat loading in Tag Assistant's preview counts as a visit.

Step 5 · Check it's live

  1. Open your site in a private (incognito) window.
  2. Look for the chat button in a bottom corner of the page (bottom-right or bottom-left, depending on your Position setting). Click it and ask a question a customer would ask.
  3. Opening any page of your site once also registers the widget as live in CAAC Go.

Test my install can't see tags added through a tag manager. It reads your page's source, and a tag injected by GTM isn't in that source, so until the chat has loaded on your site at least once, it will say it can't confirm the install either way. After that, CAAC Go shows ✓ Live on your domain. The private-window check above is the one that counts.

Troubleshooting

The chat button doesn't appear

I see two chat buttons

The snippet is loading twice — usually because it's in GTM and also pasted directly into your site, or because there are two CAAC Go tags in the container. Keep one and remove the other.

Test my install says it can't tell

That's normal for GTM installs, because the snippet isn't in your page's source. Open any page of your site once and the widget registers as live.

My site doesn't have Google Tag Manager yet

This method needs the GTM container already on every page. If you'd have to add code to your site to install GTM, it's simpler to paste the CAAC Go snippet directly. Some website builders only allow custom code on paid plans, and that applies to the GTM container and the CAAC Go snippet alike — see the guides for WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Wix.

Common questions

Does an AI chatbot slow down my site?

The snippet loads with async, so it doesn't block your page from rendering.

Can I show the chatbot on only some pages?

Yes. Instead of All Pages, give the tag a Page View trigger that fires only on the pages you choose (for example, when Page Path equals /contact). If you want the chat inside a page's content instead of as a floating button, CAAC Go's install options include an inline frame (Use an inline frame →). Test my install can't detect inline-frame installs (it may say the snippet isn't there), and they don't show as live in CAAC Go. To check one, open that page yourself and ask the chat a question.

Should I use Google Tag Manager or paste the snippet directly?

If GTM is already on your site and you manage other tags there, it's a tidy place to keep the snippet. If not, pasting the snippet directly works just as well, and Test my install can confirm it for you.

Do I need a developer?

No — if you can paste text and click save, you can do this yourself. If you'd rather hand it off, open Need help installing? in CAAC Go and click Copy install instructions to send the steps to someone else. Developers can also read the install reference.
