How to add an AI chatbot to Squarespace
To add an AI chatbot to Squarespace, you need the Core plan or higher — the Basic plan can't use code injection. Copy your snippet from CAAC Go, then in Squarespace 7.1 go to Pages → Custom Code → Code Injection, paste it into the Footer field and click Save. Squarespace adds Footer code before </body> on every page, so the chat button appears across your whole site.
Before you start
A CAAC Go account — sign up free, no credit card needed.
An agent trained on your business — see how to train your AI agent.
Your snippet from CAAC Go — Step 1 shows where to copy it.
A Squarespace plan that allows code injection: Core or higher (Core, Plus or Advanced, or the older Business and Commerce plans). Basic can't use code injection.
Step 1 · Copy your snippet in CAAC Go
Channels → 💬 Website widget → 🌐 Add to my website → Copy snippet
- In CAAC Go, click Channels in the sidebar, then 💬 Website widget.
- On the install card, choose 🌐 Add to my website.
- Click Copy snippet.
Your snippet looks like this:
<script src="https://caacgo.cresclab.com/widget.js" data-key="YOUR_WIDGET_KEY" data-color="#5090FF" async></script>Copy your own snippet from the dashboard. It already has your widget key in place of YOUR_WIDGET_KEY, so never type the key by hand — one wrong character and the chat won't find your agent. The widget key is public (anyone can see it in your site's HTML), so it's fine to paste it into your site settings.
Step 2 · Paste the snippet into Code Injection (Squarespace 7.1)
Pages → Custom Code → Code Injection → Footer → Save
- In Squarespace, open the Pages panel.
- At the bottom of the panel, click Custom Code.
- Click Code Injection.
- Paste your snippet into the Footer field.
- Click Save.
Squarespace injects Footer code just before </body> on every page, which is exactly where CAAC Go's snippet belongs. Paste it once only.
If there's no Custom Code at the bottom of your Pages panel, your site may be on Squarespace 7.0 — use the steps below.
On Squarespace 7.0
Pages → Website Tools → Code Injection → Footer → Save
- Open the Pages panel.
- Click Website Tools.
- Click Code Injection.
- Paste your snippet into the Footer field and click Save.
Use the site-wide Footer field in both versions. Squarespace's per-page code injection (Page Header Code Injection) only adds code to that page's <head>, with no end-of-page option, so it isn't the right place for this snippet.
Step 3 · Check it's live
- Back in CAAC Go (Channels → 💬 Website widget), choose 🌐 Add to my website, then click Test my install. It fetches the homepage of the website your agent was trained on and looks for the snippet. When it finds it, you'll see "✓ Live on" followed by your domain.
- Open your live site in a private (incognito) window rather than the Squarespace editor, so you see it the way a visitor does.
- Look for the chat button in a bottom corner of the page (bottom-right or bottom-left, depending on your Position setting). Click it and ask a question a customer would ask.
Troubleshooting
The chat button doesn't appear
- Check your live site in a private window, not the editor preview. If you're logged in to Squarespace, a normal window may not run your custom code (for example, after you click Disable Scripts in Preview).
- Make sure you pasted into the site-wide Footer field and clicked Save.
- Check the widget is switched on: in Channels → 💬 Website widget, make sure Widget enabled is on, then click Save changes.
- If you use the domain allowlist (Workspace → Security → Domain allowlist, "Only allow on specific domains"), your site's address must be on the list, one domain per line.
*.yourbusiness.comcovers your subdomains. - If Test my install finds the snippet but you still can't see the button, your site's CSS may be hiding it. Ask whoever looks after your site's design to check.
I see two chat buttons
The snippet has been added twice — for example, in the Footer field and somewhere else on your site. Remove one copy so it loads only once.
I can't find Code Injection
Code injection needs the Core plan or higher. On Basic, upgrade your Squarespace plan first.
The editor preview behaves oddly after adding the snippet
Turn on Disable Scripts in Preview. It only affects the editor preview, not your visitors. Check the result on your live site in a private window.
There's no chat button on my checkout page
That's expected. Squarespace doesn't allow custom code on checkout pages, so the chat button won't appear there.
Who can help if something's not working?
Squarespace support doesn't troubleshoot custom code, so for help with the chat itself, use Help & support in CAAC Go.
Common questions
Which Squarespace plan do I need for an AI chatbot?
Core or higher: Core, Plus or Advanced, or the older Business and Commerce plans. Basic can't use code injection, which is where the snippet goes.
Does an AI chatbot slow down my Squarespace site?
The snippet loads with async, so it doesn't block your page from rendering.
Can I show the chatbot on only some pages?
Squarespace's per-page injection is head-only, so use the site-wide Footer field and the chat appears on every page. If you want the chat on one page only, CAAC Go's install options include an inline frame (Use an inline frame →). Test my install can't confirm inline-frame installs, so open that page in a private window to check the chat loads.
Do I need a developer?
No — if you can paste text and click save, you can do this yourself. If you'd rather hand it off, open Need help installing? in CAAC Go and click Copy install instructions to send the steps to someone else. Developers can also read the install reference.
