How to add an AI chatbot to WordPress (no code)
To add an AI chatbot to WordPress, copy your snippet from CAAC Go, install the free WPCode plugin, and paste the snippet into its Footer box under Code Snippets → Header & Footer. Save, clear any cache, and the chat button appears on every page. On WordPress.com, the same steps work on any paid plan.
Before you start
A CAAC Go account — sign up free, no credit card needed.
An agent trained on your business — see how to train your AI agent.
Your snippet from CAAC Go — Step 1 shows where to copy it.
On WordPress.com, a paid plan (Personal, Premium, Business or Commerce). Free WordPress.com sites can't install plugins.
Step 1 · Copy your snippet in CAAC Go
Channels → 💬 Website widget → 🌐 Add to my website → Copy snippet
- In CAAC Go, click Channels in the sidebar, then 💬 Website widget.
- On the install card, choose 🌐 Add to my website.
- Click Copy snippet.
Your snippet looks like this:
<script src="https://caacgo.cresclab.com/widget.js" data-key="YOUR_WIDGET_KEY" data-color="#5090FF" async></script>Copy your own snippet from the dashboard. It already has your widget key in place of YOUR_WIDGET_KEY, so never type the key by hand — one wrong character and the chat won't find your agent. The widget key is public (anyone can see it in your site's HTML), so it's fine to paste it into your site settings.
Step 2 · Install the free WPCode plugin
Plugins → Add New Plugin → search "WPCode" → Install Now → Activate
- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
- Search for "WPCode".
- Find "WPCode – Insert Headers and Footers + Custom Code Snippets" and click Install Now.
- Click Activate.
WPCode is free. Using a plugin means you don't have to edit your theme's files, which theme updates can overwrite.
Step 3 · Paste the snippet into the Footer box
Code Snippets → Header & Footer → Footer → Save Changes
- In the WordPress sidebar, go to Code Snippets → Header & Footer.
- You'll see three boxes: Header, Body and Footer. Paste your snippet into Footer.
- Click Save Changes.
Use Footer, not Header or Body: CAAC Go's snippet belongs at the end of the page, just before </body>. Paste it once only.
If you don't see Code Snippets in the sidebar, WPCode's "Headers & Footers mode" is probably on. In that case the same screen is at Settings → Header & Footer.
Step 4 · Clear your cache
If your site uses a caching plugin, clear its cache after saving. Otherwise visitors can keep getting a stored copy of your pages from before you added the snippet.
Step 5 · Check it's live
- Back in CAAC Go (Channels → 💬 Website widget), choose 🌐 Add to my website, then click Test my install. It fetches the homepage of the website your agent was trained on and looks for the snippet. When it finds it, you'll see "✓ Live on" followed by your domain.
- Open your site in a private (incognito) window, so you see it the way a new visitor does.
- Look for the chat button in a bottom corner of the page (bottom-right or bottom-left, depending on your Position setting). Click it and ask a question a customer would ask.
On WordPress.com
If your site is hosted on WordPress.com, you can use the same plugin on any paid plan: Personal, Premium, Business or Commerce. Free sites need to upgrade first, because they can't install plugins.
- In your WordPress.com dashboard, go to Plugins.
- Search for "WPCode" and click Install and activate.
- Follow Step 3 above: paste your snippet into the Footer box and click Save Changes.
On WordPress.com, JavaScript only runs once "hosting features" are activated for your site. Installing a plugin activates them, so once WPCode is installed you're set.
Troubleshooting
The chat button doesn't appear
Work through these in order:
- Clear your caching plugin's cache, then reload your site in a private window.
- Make sure WPCode is still active. If the plugin is deactivated, the snippet stops loading.
- Check the widget is switched on: in Channels → 💬 Website widget, make sure Widget enabled is on, then click Save changes.
- If you use the domain allowlist (Workspace → Security → Domain allowlist, "Only allow on specific domains"), your site's address must be on the list, one domain per line.
*.yourbusiness.comcovers your subdomains. - If Test my install finds the snippet but you still can't see the button, your site's CSS may be hiding it. Ask whoever looks after your site's design to check.
I see two chat buttons
The snippet has been added twice — for example, once in WPCode and once in your theme or another plugin. Remove one copy so it loads only once.
I can't install plugins
Free WordPress.com sites can't install plugins, so upgrade to a paid plan (Personal or higher). On a self-hosted site, ask whoever manages it to install WPCode, or send them the steps with Copy install instructions.
Test my install doesn't find the snippet
Clear your cache and try again. Test my install checks your homepage, so make sure the snippet is saved in WPCode's site-wide Footer box.
Common questions
Does an AI chatbot slow down my WordPress site?
The snippet loads with async, so it doesn't block your page from rendering.
Can I show the chatbot on only some pages?
The Footer box adds the chat button to every page, which is what most sites want. If you want the chat on one page only, CAAC Go's install options include an inline frame (Use an inline frame →). Test my install can't confirm inline-frame installs, so open that page in a private window to check the chat loads.
Can I paste the snippet into my theme's footer.php instead?
We don't recommend it. Theme updates can overwrite footer.php and remove the snippet without you noticing. WPCode keeps it separate from your theme.
Do I need a developer?
No — if you can paste text and click save, you can do this yourself. If you'd rather hand it off, open Need help installing? in CAAC Go and click Copy install instructions to send the steps to someone else. Developers can also read the install reference.
